2002 Match Reports

Date: 27 August

Versus: Epsom

Venue: Ruxley

Result: OCs win by 49 runs

Report:

Last match of the season and, yes, the weather was fine, the oppo did not cry off and we played an 18 over match.  OCs had a strong batting side on paper. Returning skipper Mark won the toss and elected to bat.  John 'Dad' Brandon went cheaply for seven runs and there followed a strong second wicket partnership between Reuben 28 and Parker 69.

The Epsom bowling was wayward at times with total extras around 20 including 12 wides.  Which left OCs with a total of 127 at the end.

All the pre match talk was about the runner up bowling trophy and the batting trophies, in each case three players were in contention.  Andy F bowled a miserly spell of three overs for three runs for no wickets. John Bolland opened the bowling at the clubhouse end and also bowled three overs for 1 wicket and went for twenty.

Chris Ducklin then came on to bowl an erratic couple of overs but managed to take a wicket for twelve runs.   Munawar had three rather expensive overs due to some short pitched bowling and took no wickets. Then on came James and Bisson.  Dave J bowled three overs and managed to take 5 wickets including a superb catch from Dad on the run at mid on and the skipper bowled just one over for 1 wicket and three runs.

The game ended with Epsom on 78.

Date: 20 August

Versus: Epsom Taxes

Venue: Ruxley

Result: OCs win by 7 wickets

Report:

Epsom Taxes won the toss and elected to bat.   Match reduced to 18 overs due to the difficult conditions, overcast and fading light.

Bowling: Finnerty (4 ovs, 1 for 15); James (4 ovs , 0 for 29); Manuwar (4 ovs, 0 for 29); Reuben (2 ovs, 2 for 17); Doyle (4ovs, 0 for 32)

Epsom Taxes finished their innings on 124 for 3.

Brandon and Reuben opened OCs innings and scored an 80 run partnership before Reuben was caught and bowled on 36. Doyle came in at no.3 went for a quick 2 runs but run out on the second. Brandon followed 2 balls later, caught for 30.

Disaster, 3 wickets lost in 4 balls.  What was acting skipper Andy F to do?

Cometh the hour, cometh the (Steve) Howard, in at no.4.  Steve scored 29 not
out including the winning runs with a 4 off the last ball when 1 run was needed to win! He fielded superbly too! Bala (7 runs retired) and James (2 not out) helped the team to victory.

Ocs needed 6 runs to win off the last over which was bowled in the dark just before 8.30pm. Unbelievable finish and the oppo were not happy!

Date: 30 July

Versus: Sutton

Venue: Ruxley

Result: OCs win by 31 runs

Report:

The OCs opening pair was soon split up with Dave J qualifying for the primary club.  The ever dependable John Brandon was joined by Ben Krempell and these two steadied the ship.  John finally holed out on 25 and Ben heard the death rattle with 27 runs to his name.

Trev came to the crease knowing that the gas pedal needed to be pressed - he didn't disappoint.  A boundary off his first ball set the tone.  At the end Trev had amassed 38 and OCs 110.

Munawar opened the OCs bowling - when Andy F took a great catch off the third ball and John Brandon an even better one off the fifth OCs sensed a kill was on.

OCs quality field performance continued.  Munawar finished with 5 wickets for 12 runs off 3.2 overs - the best bowling spell of the season so far.  With John Bolland and Mark taking 2 wickets a piece and Chris D one, at one stage Sutton were 39 for 9.  Sutton's last wicket pair of Patrick (22) and Satchell (37 no) dug in and took their score to 79 before Patrick played on to be Munawar's fifth victim.

Date: 16 July

Versus: Kingston Taxes

Venue: Ruxley

Result: OCs win by 7 wickets

Report:

Real surprise - it was a fine, warm evening.  Taxes won the toss and elected to bat.  They started steadily and went on steadily to 95.

OCs performance in the field was exemplary, with guest players Nathan Reuben and Jamie stopping everything that came their way.  Ben Reuben grabbed two wickets and claimed another run out with a superb direct hit.  John Bolland and Mark collected one a piece but the star bowler was Chris Ducklin, stealing two wickets in two balls and finishing his 4 overs giving away a frugal 17 runs.

OCs regular opening pair was soon broken as Ben had a bit of a brainstorm.  John Brandon, however, continued his run of form and carried his bat, again, finishing on 40.  Andy F made up for missing a chance to bowl with a contribution of 20 runs.

OCs were up with the required rate until the 16th over.  Then Trev Honsec latched on to some loose bowling - 16 runs in three consecutive balls got the fat lady singing.

Date: 2 July

Versus: Epsom Taxes

Venue: Ruxley

Result: OCs win by 13 runs

Report:

Surprise surprise it was raining.

OCs batted first and opener John Brandon was in sparkling form, carrying his bat for the full 18 overs, reaching an undefeated 60 runs. Contributions of 15 from Ben and 28no from Simon meant an OC total of 103.

It was still raining for Epsom to attempt to overhaul the target.  After 6 overs the rust set in and the effort ground to a halt.  The Duckworth-Lewis-Trev-Biss formula meant OCs were the clear winners.

Date: 25 June

Versus: Kingston VIPs

Venue: Ruxley

Result: OCs win by a few runs

Report:

In a special game to celebrate 20 years since Trevor Collett and Mark Bison first played for Kingston Engineers the current OCs' team took on some luminaries from the Royal Borough.

OCs batted first and amassed 123 runs.

The VIP team contained many famous names, Prav Amin, Bill Dawes, Dave Kelly, Bob Hart, Gary Gurney, Bruce Bolton, Chris Hamshar.

The legendary Keith Murton had promised himself just to umpire but the irrepressible cricketer in him meant he ended up bowling for both sides and knocking some valuable runs at the end.  Classic stuff.

Date: 11 June

Versus: CMG

Venue: Ruxley

Result: CMG win by 2 wickets

Report:

Another soggy day.  The OCs' opening partnership was broken early when Ben was controversially given out LBW (had Trev worked out his average?).  John Brandon went on to 19.  With contributions of 34 from Ian and 25 n.o. from Trev OCs finished on 100.

The OCs' bowlers were on pretty good form, Andy  taking 3 wickets for just 9 runs off 3 overs.  Skipper Mark got 2 wickets for 9 runs, with Ian, Bala and Munawar taking one a piece.  This pretty much finished off CMG... except for one Dave James whose 65 run haul saw them to victory with just 3 balls remaining.

Date: 28 May

Versus: Trading Standards

Venue: Ruxley

Result: OCs win by 22 runs

Report:

Good win thanks to some excellent batting from Ben 44 retired (again, protecting his average) and Ian D with 52 giving a total of 122 for 3.   An excellent score on a damp wicket where the ball kept low.

Andy (4-0-5) and John (4-1-21) bowled well to ensure that Trading Standards were behind thev run rate after 8 overs. This was followed by a slightly erratic spell from Skipper Mark (4-1-34) only surpassed by an even more erratic fielding and bowling display form Rupert!. He claims he didn't see the ball because he only had one contact lens in and then proceeded to take a superb one handed catch.  Ian (2-1-9)and Bala (2-2-12) were brought on to maintain OC's grip on the match. They needed 25 off the last over which they never looked liked getting and another victory was in the bag
